About us

A brief history of the Théâtre Parminou and its activities

Born in the turbulence of the social movements and the anti-establishment currents of the 70's the troupe rapidly defined itself through its desire to break out of the confines of repertory theatre and that of the establishment. Since its founding in May 1973 by graduates of the Dramatic Arts Conservatory of Montreal and Quebec, Theatre Parminou's mission has been one of creation and touring. Because we believe in regionalization and because the prevalent politics of decentralization appealed to us, we set up shop in Victoriaville in 1976 with a view to reaching out to the whole of the region.

Since 1989, Parminou has been located in its production center, one of the first of its kind to be established by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs during that period. While pursuing its mission, that of a national company, Parminou established privileged relationships with its Centre du Québec region from which it has received an increasingly important support.

Its 35 year history has been marked by hundreds of creations which include :

  • L'argent ça fait-y vot' bonheur ? (1975)
  • Partez pas en peur (1978)
  • O Travail (1980)
  • Spectacles historiques extérieurs à la Place Royale à Québec (1980-1988)
  • Bonne crise Lucien (1982)
  • L'égalité brille pour tout le monde (1985)
  • Dans de beaux draps (1989)
  • Les bleus amoureux (1991)
  • L'arme au cour (1994)
  • Mon paradis d'enfer (1995)
  • Les Amériques à la une (1997)
  • Sur le dos de l'amour (1998)
  • Qui dit vieux ! (1999)
  • Facile à dire ! (2001)
  • Aller savoir ! (2002)
  • Visage à trois faces (2002)
  • Blanche détresse (2003)
  • Routes secondaires (2003)
  • Le Prince serpent (2003)
  • Le vent dans les voiles (2003)
  • Perdues dans le trafic (2004)
  • Res Publica (2004)
  • Encore (2005)
  • Les vendredis de Sophie (2005)
  • Deux poids, deux mesures (2006)
  • Les contes de la richesse (2007)

Following workshops presented by Théâtre Parminou in Africa, we also collaborated with Senegal's Bamtaare troupe for the creation of a production on violence toward women.

On two occasions we also attended the « Festival pour le développement » at Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso

We have also worked on the creation of Planète pauvre (1996) with Manila's Théâtre Peta in the Philippines

As a result of our collaboration with Belgium's Théâtre-Action which dates back to 1996, we were invited to play several regions of Belgium and France in presentations of «Mon paradis d'enfer» and «Mondialissimo», a joint creation with the Compagnie du Campus (Belgique), the Acteurs de l'Ombre (Belgique), the Théâtre du Levant (France) and, more recently in, «Revenez Lundi» a joint production with the Théâtre du Campus in Belgium.

On the international scene, the troupe has travelled overseas with a number of its works

  • Partez pas en peur (Grenoble, 1977)
  • Ton histoire est une des pas pires (Côte d'Ivoire 1981)
  • Bonne crise Lucien (Paris, Hennensal, 1983)
  • Ben voyons bébé, y'a rien là (France, Suisse 1983)
  • Dernière France d'Amérique (France 1984)
  • L'égalité brille pour tout le monde (France 1988)
  • Mon paradis d'enfer (Belgique, France 1998)
  • Mondialissimo (Belgique, France 2000)
  • Revenez lundi (Belgique 2006)

Furthermore, we have also reached out on occasion by inviting other groups to come and perform here

Théâtre du Levant in 1985, during a conference in Montréal

The Zigas Company from Togo for which we arranged a tour of about ten performances in November 2003 for the «Journées québécoises de solidarité internationale » circuit during which we ourselves presented Les Amériques à la une in1998 and Mondialissimo in 2001

We are currently involved with the One Drop Foundation on a large scale awareness project concerning the preservation of water in Central America.

Théâtre Parminou is established as a non-profit organization operating with the support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québe, the city of Victoriaville and, for some of its projects, by the Canada Council for the Arts. 75% of the annual operating budget is self-generated. There are about fifteen permanent full-time employees and, in accordance with requirements, some thirty-odd freelance professionals who annually join the permanent staff.
